In Diet Myths That Keep Us Fat, Nancy Snyderman sets out to dispel 101 myths about dieting and provides a sensible, scientifically proven approach to weight loss.

As Snyderman points out in Diet Myths That Keep Us Fat, there is never a shortage of information about how to lose weight. In fact, would-be dieters are often overwhelmed with tips and advice from family, friends, the media, fad-diet promoters, and diet pill manufacturers. However, much of the dieting advice doled out is misinformation which only creates feelings of frustration in those who work hard to follow such advice and see no results. In Diet Myths That Keep Us Fat, Snyderman explores the most popular weight loss myths and sets the record straight.

Weight Loss Myths

According to Snyderman, weight loss should actually be an enjoyable experience, but with so much information bombarding dieters about what they need to do or not do to lose weight, most give up before even trying because of confusion or quit trying out of frustration when they do not see results. By exploring weight loss myths, Snyderman provides answers to questions such as:

  • Is belly fat linked to dementia?
  • Do calorie-free sodas cause weight gain?
  • Can salads cause weight gain?
  • Are carbs really good or really bad?
  • Can more weight be lost in cold weather?
  • Is flatulence a sign of a healthy diet?
  • Do taste buds really get “bored” after the third bite?
  • Are the greatest fitness gains obtained in the first few weeks of a workout?
  • Does coffee boost metabolism?
  • Does salad dressing help the body absorb nutrients?

In addition, Snyderman provides information in regards to multivitamins and other supplements, staying active, and how to lose weight without stress or feelings of deprivation or discouragement that often accompanies dieting efforts.

The Treat Yourself Diet

Snyderman believes depriving oneself of favorite foods is a recipe for failure, so she created a diet that is based on “treat meals.” Dieters follow Snyderman’s plan six days a week and then can eat one meal on Saturday and Sunday consisting of whatever foods they wish. The Treat Yourself Diet is based on tried and true nutritional advice such as drinking more water, using herbs to flavor food, controlling portions, eating a variety of fruits and vegetables, choosing whole grains, including healthy fats and oils in the diet (in moderation), and exercising. Snyderman includes sample meal plans for the diet and suggestions for the treat meals.

Overall, Diet Myths That Keep Us Fat is an easy read and offers some surprising facts about much of the misinformation that abounds in the diet industry. Snyderman provides a personal account of her previous weight loss struggles, which lets readers know that she not only has educational experience backing her advice, but hands-on experience with the issues involved with losing weight.
