Review of The Diet Selector by Judith Rodriguez

A Guide for Finding the Right Diet Plan for Any Lifestyle

May 9, 2009 Jennifer Murray

With The Diet Selector, Judith Rodriguez offers readers a way to find the right diet plan to fit one's lifestyle without spending a lot of time or money.

With so many diet plans on the market and diet books lining bookstore shelves, trying to find the right diet can often be an overwhelming and expensive process. In The Diet Selector, Rodriguez puts in-depth information on 50 weight loss diet plans and 25 health-promotion and/or disease-management diets all at the reader's fingertips in one handy guide.

Comprehensive Diet Plan Information

From cleansing to meal replacement plans, Rodriguez not only provides information about well-known diet plans such as Atkins, the Glycemic Index, and Zone, but also lesser-known diets such as The Tri-Color Diet, the Complete Hip and Thigh Diet, and the Pregnancy Diet. Included with each diet is the diet's history, specific information about how the diet works, a sample weekly menu plan, and the pros and cons of the diet.

Each diet plan comes with a diet resource box in which Rodriguez lists both online resources and books for those who have narrowed down their diet plan choice to investigate further or to get started on the plan. Also included in the resource list are similar diet plans.

Diet Plan Ratings

In The Diet Selector, Rodriguez rates each diet based on long-term usability, flexibility, family-friendliness, cost, and how strong the science is behind the claims of a diet. Using color-coded bullet icons, Rodriguez answers these common questions:

  • Is the diet plan a long-term plan or should it only be used for a short period of time?
  • Does the diet provide flexibility in meal and snack options? Does the diet leave room for treats?
  • Is the diet plan family-friendly or can only the dieter follow the diet plan?
  • Can a dieter follow the diet with usual foods or are there special foods, meal replacements and/or supplements that have to be purchased?
  • Is there scientific evidence to back up a diet's claims? If so, how strong is the scientific evidence?

Dieting Advice

In addition to comprehensive diet plan information, Rodriguez also provides tips on how to make the most of any diet plan; taking a life-long approach to weight loss and health; how to increase activity levels; how to determine what one's ideal weight really is; and information on eating disorders.

Overall, The Diet Selector is informative, well-organized, and easy to read. Rodriguez provides enough in-depth diet plan information to help readers take the guesswork out of finding which diet may work best for them, fitting not only their lifestyle but also their budget.
